YOUR SUPPORT HELPS FAMILIES

When Sonia* found herself in family court fighting for custody of her grandson, she knew she would need assistance with not only navigating the legal system, but with language. Sonia is now a US citizen where in the immigration system she also received language assistance, but her English remains limited, especially in higher acuity situations and further complicated by never having learned to read or write in her native language.

Thankfully, Sonia’s court-appointed attorney knew about Access Language Solutions’ grant-funded program to assist in preparing individuals like Sonia for their day in court. Because of this, she was able to understand her options, speak for herself, and move forward with dignity.

WHY DONOR SUPPORT MATTERS

Donor support helps ensure that families are not forced to rely on children, relatives, or friends to interpret painful and private legal matters. Your investment helps provide qualified language professionals when families are facing some of the most important decisions of their lives.

WHAT YOUR GIFT MAKES POSSIBLE

  • A voice in the courtroom: Qualified spoken-language and sign language interpreters help families understand proceedings and share critical information. Note: the state of Kentucky provides interpreting in front of the judge. ALS provides court prep and a table interpreter in court, if needed.

  • Help when it matters most: Onsite, video, or phone interpreting can support urgent hearings, conferences, and court- connected services.

  • A stronger safety net: Scheduling support, staff training, and consistent procedures help courts respond with care and reliability.

THE IMPACT

  • A parent/guardian stands in front of a judge understanding their case and their rights. They leave court understanding the next step instead of feeling lost.

  • A survivor can communicate safety concerns without asking a child to interpret.

  • A hearing moves forward because the right language support is available at the right time.
