Refuge for Women is the nation’s largest non-profit, faith-based organization that provides a continuum of care for women, ages 18 and older, who have escaped human trafficking or sexual exploitation. With multiple locations across the U.S., Refuge for Women offers up to two years of safe housing, at no charge to the resident, with 24 hour a day staffing through emergency housing, long term, and transitional living programs. Each Refuge for Women program is designed with an evidence-based curriculum, and staff is trained to help residents recognize their goals in life, assist them in reaching those goals, and facilitate healing. The hope is for each woman to leave Refuge for Women with a vision for her future, equipped to succeed and sustain a life marked with dignity and hope.
Refuge for Women was formed in 2009 in Lexington, KY by Ked and Michelle Frank as a result of a series of conversations and relationships with leaders of a local organization doing outreach to women working in strip clubs. In 2010, the first safe-house was opened. Building on the original vision coupled with over ten years of experience, we are expanding into many locations with one mission of restoring lives. Now, Kentucky boasts a 24 'Free to Flourish' apartments near Lexington, Kentucky that houses women and their children as they heal, grow and find hope. In 2025, the Emergency House opened near Louisville, giving up to 10 women at a time a place to find immediate rest and safety as they detox with dignity and take the first steps in their journey towards freedom.
Refuge for Women is successfully operating program homes in five states with additional sites launching soon. A multi-site model enables those who share the vision to join forces in strengthening our collective influence and maximizing resources for greater impact.
