In 1941, the Kentucky Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (KSDAR), acquired the deteriorated property at 323 High Street in Paris for $1, saving Duncan Tavern from demolition. Today, this landmark—valued at nearly $1 million—stands as one of Kentucky’s most significant historic structures.
As one of the few remaining 1790s-era taverns, Duncan Tavern embodies the Commonwealth’s early history. Taverns were vital to westward expansion through Maysville and the Cumberland Gap, serving simultaneously as political forums, temporary courthouses, and centers of commerce.
KSDAR has faithfully maintained this heritage site for more than eight decades. We now are building an endowment to secure the future of Duncan Tavern for generations to come.
