Building a Healthier, More Resilient Local Food System

Since 2011, FoodChain has been connecting our community to fresh, healthy food through education, sustainable food systems, and direct food access.

What began as a vision to bring hands-on learning and local food together has grown into an organization that feeds our neighbors, empowers future food leaders, supports Kentucky farmers, and creates innovative solutions for food access in Lexington.

Today, FoodChain is helping lead the Food is Medicine movement in our community by providing fresh, locally sourced meals, expanding child nutrition programs, and creating new pathways for families to access healthy food.

What We Do

Feed Our Neighbors

FoodChain prepares and distributes fresh, scratch-made meals for families, seniors, children, and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Since our founding, we have prepared and shared more than 1.5 million meals with our community.

Empower Future Food Leaders

Through our BUFF (Bluegrass Urban Farm Friends) paid internship program, middle and high school youth gain hands-on experience in aquaponics, agriculture, culinary skills, research, and workforce development.

Strengthen Kentucky Farmers

We purchase from Kentucky farmers and food producers, including small, family, and BIPOC-owned farms. This creates stronger local markets while bringing more locally grown food into community meals and programs.

Expand Access to Fresh Food

Our Neighborhood Green Grocery is now open, bringing affordable, fresh, locally sourced food directly into our community. The grocery offers fresh produce, prepared meals, staple foods, and other nutritious options while creating another way for families to access the food they need.

Our NORI fresh food vending machine extends that access beyond traditional hours, providing 24/7 access to fresh, healthy meals right outside FoodChain.

Together, these initiatives are helping us rethink what food access can look like by making healthy food more convenient, dignified, and accessible.
