The Kentucky Center for Grieving Children and Families

About the Organization

Loss is hard and often lonely. The KCGCF creates safe and supportive spaces where children and their caregivers can connect and begin their grief journeys after the loss of a significant person. Trained clinicians and facilitators lead grief support groups for bereaved youth in schools in Fayette and Franklin Counties (Scott and Madison coming in 2024!), as well as free, community-based grief groups in Lexington for children and teens aged 4-18 (and their caregivers). The KCGCF also offers the Peer Healing virtual grief support group for teens aged 13-18, an online teen-led group serving youth from all over Kentucky. Because each person's experience of loss is different, KCGCF groups incorporate a number of healing and participatory approaches, ranging from art therapy to mindfulness and other integrative medicine techniques. The KCGCF also offers education, peer support, and family activities for parents and caregivers to help them better understand and support their grieving children as they rebuild their families. Education about grief and loss is critical in our post-Covid world. The KCGCF conducts teacher, community, and professional training to empower those who work with grieving youth to be active healing companions and advocates for children who have suffered loss. During the last year, the KCGCF has presented training to more than 1200 educators, community professionals, and students. Day by day, we create spaces for healing and help build a more grief-sensitive world for Kentucky's children as they find healthy paths forward after loss.
