Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras

Since 1947, the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras (CKYO) has shaped the lives of young musicians, standing as one of the oldest youth orchestras in the nation. This season, nearly 500 students from 12 counties and 40 schools join CKYO’s seven ensembles—from three symphonic orchestras to jazz and percussion groups. While CKYO fosters artistic excellence, its true mission is to instill a lifelong love of music, nurturing young minds and their appreciation for the arts.

CKYO also champions equitable access to music education, offering after-school programs that make a real difference in the lives of underserved students. Through Friends in Music, advanced CKYO players mentor middle schoolers, while CKYO MusicWorks, inspired by El Sistema, provides high-quality, intensive music education to build confidence and foster positive growth in Lexington’s youth.
