New Opportunity School for Women, Inc.

Appalachian women encounter overwhelming barriers to education, employment, and financial independence that prevent them from using their gifts and abilities to create a stable and rewarding life for themselves, their families, and their communities. Since its founding in 1987, NOSW, Inc. has been working hand-in-hand with low-income Appalachian women to remove these barriers, one woman at a time, through unique educational programs tailored specifically to meet their needs.

NOSW offers two types of programs, absolutely free of cost. A two-week educational residential program, where women spend two weeks with a dedicated staff and professional facilitators to learn about topics such as self-esteem, integrative health and wellness, job skills, leadership, and civic engagement. New to 2017, NOSW introduced non-residential programs that run a week hosted with partner sites throughout the region. These non-residential programs take from our residential curriculum what we find to be the core of what our program has to offer: self-esteem and self-care. These programs serve to help Appalachian women remove their barriers, by providing them with the tools they need to become self-resilient and independent as they follow their dreams of education, sustainable employment and finding their own voices.
