Bluegrass Greensource

For 17 years, Bluegrass Greensource has empowered individuals, businesses, organizations, and communities with the tools they need to create a more sustainable Bluegrass. We do this in 20 counties through direct engagement of students and teachers, community members, businesses, and others who are invested in creating a more sustainable Central Kentucky.

At Bluegrass Greensource, we believe that small, every day changes make a big impact on our shared environment. We also believe that everyone can make a difference, no matter your background. Our goal is to empower you by providing the knowledge and resources you need to make that difference.

We work with people throughout 20 Central Kentucky counties to create this change. In 2016, we:

-- Had 89,678 engagements on such topics as waste reduction and recycling, water quality, energy efficiency, urban forestry, and home sustainability.
-- Conducted 12 energy efficiency workshops that engaged 313 Central Kentucky families.
-- Worked directly with preK-12th grade youth and their teachers in 3,700 Central Kentucky classrooms.
-- Invested $135,000 in 69 residential water quality improvement projects in sensitive watersheds.

Every day, you will find our staff out in the community, working to remove the barriers -- be they knowledge or resources -- to increasing sustainability. Our educators will be working in the classroom alongside teachers and students, bringing to life the science of water, waste and energy. Meanwhile, our outreach specialists will be working with businesses of all sizes to help them achieve their sustainability goals, conducting workshops on building rain barrels, helping to organize a community litter clean up, or hosting a hands-on home energy efficiency workshop. Wherever they are, Bluegrass Greensource staff are illustrating that by taking small steps, our personal actions can have a big impact on the environment.
Volunteers at Bluegrass Greensource have a wide range of opportunities based on organizational needs and individual volunteer skill sets. Volunteers can complete different training courses to empower them to lead litter clean-ups, plant and maintain rain gardens, teach environmental education activities for students, and/or provide environmental information at community events. Greensource also offers more discrete opportunities to volunteers, including storm drain stenciling, litter clean-ups, constructing materials for K-12 environmental education, aiding staff with event composting and recycling, assisting with native plants and pollinator gardens, or completing general office tasks. In the past year, 1,286 people have volunteered at Bluegrass Greensource.
