For more than 30 years, the West End Community Empowerment Project of Lexington, Inc. (WECEP) has served as a stabilizing force, a safe haven, and a bridge to opportunity for children and families in Lexington.

We were founded on a simple but powerful belief: every child, regardless of their zip code, deserves the opportunity to thrive, and every family deserves support, dignity, and access to resources that help them grow.

WECEP was established in 1995 by dedicated members Tanya S. Clark, Melvin E. Cowan, Sr., Dora M. Hudson, and Dane Wilson in response to violence affecting families and children along Lexington’s Georgetown Street Corridor. What began as a community-driven effort to provide support, resources, and violence-prevention initiatives grew into an organization committed to creating lasting opportunities for children, youth, and families.

WECEP was incorporated in 1996 and received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1998. Over the years, our work has evolved from addressing the needs of the broader adult community to placing a significant focus on one of the most critical periods in a young person’s life: out-of-school time.

Today, we provide programs and experiences for children and youth ages 5–17 that encourage academic achievement, creativity through the creative and performing arts, leadership, confidence, cultural awareness, and personal growth.

Our mission, “Reclaiming the Invisible while Achieving the Impossible” reflects our commitment to children and families who may too often go unseen, unheard, or underserved.

We believe in the power of community to overcome challenges, create opportunities, and unlock potential. Our vision is a vibrant and engaged community rooted in strong families, health and wellness, educational opportunity, cultural enrichment, and civic and economic development.

WHAT WE DO

WECEP provides high-impact programming designed to meet the practical, social, emotional, creative, and academic needs of children and families, including:

• After-School Programming
• Creative & Performing Arts — African drumming, dance, poetry, visual arts, step, and more
• Seasonal & School-Break Camps
• Transportation Support
• Family Engagement & Community Events
• Youth Leadership & Character Development
• Academic Enrichment & Educational Support

Our programs are about more than keeping children occupied during out-of-school hours. We create spaces where young people are seen, challenged, supported, celebrated, and given opportunities to discover what is possible for their lives.

HOW DONATIONS FUEL OUR MISSION

Every gift helps turn opportunity into action. Donations directly support:

• Student scholarships for after-school programs and camps
• Creative & Performing Arts programming, including instruments, drum repairs, costumes, art materials, and supplies
• Transportation, including insurance, vehicle maintenance and repairs, and field trips
• Educational materials and enrichment opportunities
• Dedicated staff, instructors, and mentors
• Family and community events
• Experiences that expose young people to opportunities beyond their everyday environment
