Central Kentucky faces a critical structural gap: the region has a thriving community of creative writers and a wealth of compelling subject matter, but has lost the institutional infrastructure that once sustained both. When the Lexington Herald-Leader eliminated its cultural coverage and released its freelance arts writers, it removed the last traditional media outlet in the metropolitan area that compensated professional writers to document the region's arts and literary community in depth. Without a platform that values and pays for this work, experienced journalists risk leaving the region or stopping writing altogether — and the public loses access to the substantive arts coverage that connects audiences to the creative work around them.

Undermain's all-volunteer staff relies on donor support to commission works of literary journalism: deeply reported, long-form features built on studio visits, videos, firsthand interviews, and original research that places the artist's work in historical, biographical, and cultural context. Our coverage spans disciplines — visual art, music, literature, theatre, dance, film, sculpture, photography — reflecting the breadth of Kentucky's creative contribution to American culture.
