Mentors & Meals


Enhancing academic achievement in middle school students through mentoring. Mentors & Meals is an inter-generational, after- school tutoring program utilizing high school mentors, college interns and adult volunteers. The program is available Monday through Thursday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. plus one "Fun Friday" or field trip per month. Snacks and hot meals are provided daily.

Mentors & Meals is FREE to enrolled students in Woodford, Scott and Clark Counties. In addition to providing 3 to 6 hours of homework help/tutoring each week, M&Ms provides after school snacks, 30 minute group activities (Monday- Gym, Tuesday- Discovery Groups, Wednesday- Guest Speakers, and Thursday- Reading Dogs) followed by hot, home-cooked meals prepared by our volunteer "iron chefs" .

In a recent program evaluation, students who attended the Mentors & Meals program had a statistically significant improvement in Language Arts and Social Studies grades and a trend toward significant improvement in Math grades (at the 90% confidence level) compared to a control group of students who did not attend the program, controlling for factors such as ethnicity, age, years in program, and income level.

Accomplishments since 2011:
* 490 students have participated in the M&Ms program
* 814 volunteers have dedicated 30,517 hours to mentoring or meal preparation for M&Ms students
* High School and College mentors have learned valuable leadership and community outreach skills
* Adults and Senior volunteers continue to provide valuable service to their community


Mentors- High school and college tutors must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on-the-job training is provided!)
Adult and Senior mentors- must have a background check on file with us
School Supplies- binders, paper, pencils, gift cards to Staples, Office Depot and Walmart
