One Parent Scholar House

Being a single parent is challenging enough, but trying to pursue higher education and find an affordable place live while doing it is another challenge all its own. That's where One Parent Scholar House comes in. We step in to provide an affordable housing option to single parent families as they pursue their education. On site, you'll find a child development center offering head start programming to children who live nearby. Our program coordinator meets monthly with every resident who lives at One Parent Scholar House to make sure they have all the resources they need to succeed in completing their degree or certificate program of choice. Residents at One Parent Scholar House become a community of support for one another as they attend workshops and events together and raise their kids alongside their neighbors.

Our resident, Safiyah, shared her story with us: She and her daughter have been residents at One Parent Scholar House for 5 years. Safiyah earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work degree from the University of Kentucky in May of 2022, becoming the first in her family to graduate. Safiyah is currently continuing her education at the University of Kentucky as she pursues a Master of Arts in Social Work. Her 5-year goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and work as a therapist or middle school counselor. Safiyah is passionate about helping students that age because she knows what it is like going through the challenges of growing up and figuring out who you are, and wants to give back as others have supported her.
