What is BLACK YARN?

Yarn is a colloquial term for storytelling. Black Yarn's mission is to confront the legacy of systemic injustice through storytelling, research, and collaboration. We connect stories, lived experience, and systems to help people see their communities more fully, ask difficult questions, and recognize where change is possible.

No organization can run on good intentions alone—funding and sustainability are key! We're raising $10,000 to support Black Yarn's 2027 programming and continue turning storytelling and research into opportunities for learning, connection, and action.

2026: Building on the Momentum

• Taking our film further. Lexington: Resilience in the Redline reached audiences across Central Kentucky, Atlanta, and Miami and earned recognition from three film festivals.
• Uncovering our history. We're nearing completion of our racially restrictive deeds research with the Fayette County Clerk’s Office and working with our partners in the University of Kentucky Department of Geography toward a publicly accessible digital map of these records.
• Engaging young people. Through Partners for Youth, teachers and students worked alongside us to uncover local history and begin seeing the systems shaping their community.
• Creating new ways to connect. Community Connections Nights, our new educational comic, and our upcoming Housing Summit are helping move the conversation from understanding our history to asking: “What now?”

2027: We're Just Getting Started

Your support will help us:

• Share our Community Housing Ecosystem Brief and reconvene the community six months after the Housing Summit.
• Launch a systems-focused youth journalism program.
• Expand Community Connections with a speaker series, more events, and opportunities to engage with programs led by sister organizations.
• Continue expanding the reach of our storytelling, research, and community work.
